KONA VISAYAN CLUB
Established since 1989

HISTORY

Like most Filipinos, the Visayans are very family-oriented, fun-loving people. We are a boisterous and gregarious lot who like happy times and get together with family and friends. So it came as no surprise when newly acquainted Visayan friends Joy Opamen, Ben Enad, Athena and Noel Ayos, Angie and Genie Presiados and several others succumbed to the Filipino spirit of kinship and camaraderie and decided to form a group. The Kona Visayan Club was then formally created in July 1989 with Joy Opamen as its first elected president. Their objectives at the time were to unite and bind themselves in the spirit of “panag-igsoonay” or brotherhood and helping one another, and to promote the Visayan culture and traditions. We still uphold these objectives till today.

In 1992, KVC joined the Congress of Visayan Organizations (COVO), the umbrella of Visayan organizations in Hawaii, whose goals are to assist in the educational, social and economic advancements of Visayans in Hawaii. Today, KVC follows the same goals. We participate in its annual convention held every August.

The Kona Visayan Club was registered at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs in the State of Hawaii and got incorporated on July 20, 2003. We recently submitted our 501.c.3 application to the IRS to get a tax- exempt status and awaiting its approval.

Now our mission has extended beyond that of fellowship to become much more of an organization reaching out and trying to help create better communities. We have established a scholarship fund to help deserving college bound students, built classrooms and nutrition center for children in the Philippines, collaborated with various organizations and agencies to Feed the Homeless, organized relief fund drives for victims of calamities and natural disasters in the Philippines and continue to participate in cultural activities and events to promote our Filipino culture.

KVC is very proud of its many accomplishments and community involvement over the years. We invite you to browse through our site to learn more about us.
